Banbury United could sign former Northampton Town striker Scott Cross should a trial prove successful.

Boss Billy Jeffrey is on the look-out for a new striker following the departure of David Stone to Halesowen and the 22-year-old forward, who was released by the Cobblers in 2007, could end his search.

“We are having a look at him pre-season and he has done well so far,” said Jeffrey.

“He was released by North-ampton, but has been playing at a lower level and is looking for a fresh start.”

He had hoped to link Stone, with their new signing from Nuneaton, Rob Foster, and Jason Taylor in attack.

“It’s a shame because with Rob, David and Jason we would have a very good front three, so we’re still looking to bring some more players in.”

“Rob scored quite a few goals and was top-scorer when (Nuneaton) got promoted the season before last.”

Stone’s move follows the departure of left back Ashton to Oxford City a few weeks ago.

“We will miss them both, but you just have to get on with it,” said Jeffrey.

“David was offered more money than we could afford by Halesowen, which is a bit strange because they were so close to folding.

“Jack’s decision was an odd one, because they already have a very good left back in Tommy Kinch, so it’s hard to see where he would fit in.”

Skipper Nathan Haisley and David Staff have agreed to sign for the season, while defender Delroy Gordon has joined from Oxford City.

Jeffrey said: “He’s a good, honest lad. I worked with him at Kettering and Stamford where I was boss.

Tomorrow, Banbury host Northern Premier League side Mickleover Sports, who are managed by former Puritans boss Dick Pratley, at Spencer Stadium (3) in their latest pre-season friendly.

Jeffrey added: “We played a young Northampton side on Tuesday (Banbury lost 1-0), but I think Mickleover, who got promoted to our level last season, will give us a better gauge of where we are at the moment.

Meanwhile, Abingdon Un-ited’s new boss Richie Bourne has strengthened their squad for their forthcoming Division 1 South & West campaign.

Winger Chris Harper has signed from Brackley Town, while Andrew Younie has joined from Hellenic League side Witney United.

In addition, midfielder Gavin Jones has signed from Bourne’s former club Wantage Town.

l ex- oxford City midfielder Mark Jones has been appointed manager of npower League Two side Stevenage Borough’s centre of excellence.
