OXFORDSHIRE Under 14s threw away a promising position as they went down to a five-wicket defeat against Warwickshire in their latest ECB County Cup clash at Wellsbourne.

Batting first, openers Dan Matthews and Joe Barrett shared 38 for the first wicket, and at 59-2, Oxon looked well set for a decent total.

Each of the top six batsmen made starts and got into double figures, but none were able to go on and post a big innings as wickets fell at regular intervals.

Matthews held the top order together with 31, but Ben Hebbert and Barrett contributed 19 apiece, only for Oxon to be bowled out for 143.

In the field, Oxon got off to the perfect start when Lawrence Brock took a wicket with Warwickshire on nought.

That quickly became 33-3 and Oxon were right in the game, but a fine half century from Matthew Lamb, supported by Monty Foley, got the home side back on track as they reached 146-5 for victory.
