Michael Fabes, of Abingdon Vale, won a silver medal in the British Gas ASA South East Region Age Group Championships in Crawley.

The 11-year-old finished second in the 1500m freestyle in a time of 20 mins 24.15 secs, which broke the club record.

Fabes also beat Abingdon’s best time for the 200m breaststroke.

Harry Basterfield, 12, broke three club records – in the 100m and 200m freestyle and the 200m backstroke.

City of Oxford’s Lizzie Oliver struck bronze in the girls age 13 800m freestyle at the regional championships, which saw the best swimmers aged 14 and under from 82 clubs in the south-east competing.

She touched home in 9 mins 37.97 secs to set a personal best and gain her first national qualifying time.

Oliver was also fifth in the 400m freestyle in 4.40.83.

Thomas Panton won bronze in the boys age 14 200m backstroke with a pb of 2.21.39 and was fourth in the 100m free-style (57.65) and got a pb of 2.07.68 in the 200m freestyle.

Lucy Smith finished fourth in the girls age 13 800m freestyle in 9.44.07, narrowly missing out on a national qualifying time.

Alexander Chung (12-year-old boys) and Eleanor McNally (11-year-old girls) both achieved respectable times in their first long-course meet in the 200m breaststroke (3.14.76) and 100m breaststroke (1.38.53) respectively.

Other Abingdon Vale swimmers competing were Joseph Law, Nienke Lijzenga, Niall O’Leary and Emma Pearce.
