Oxfordshire Under 12s kicked off their season with a resounding victory against Wiltshire on a quick and bouncy Abingdon School track.

The visitors were going well at 78-1 before spin twins Arthur Beard and the economical Daniel Patty applied the brakes.

A couple wickets from medium-pacer Jack Davies (2-39) and some excellent work by Magdalen College School keeper Niall Devaney then kept the Wiltshire side down to a below par 155-6 of their 40 overs.

Oxfordshire openers, Abingdon School debutant Connor Graney and Jordan Garrett got the side of to a flying start in response.

Scoring well above the asking run rate, they made a huge dent in the meagre Wiltshire total, putting on 83 for the opening wicket.

Although Garrett fell for 43, Graney batted on and carried his bat for an excellent 58 not out as Oxfordshire cruised home by seven wickets with three overs to spare.

Oxon coach Damian Shirazi said: “I was particularly impressed by the fielding performance.

“The openers then batted positively setting up the win.”
