Wing wizard Alfie Potter says United just need to get some momentum now before the play-offs come along.

The 21-year-old, whose fifth league goal of the season – from only ten starts and eight sub appearances – saw off Salisbury on Monday, got extra joy from his late winner because of the unfairness, he felt, of having a goal chalked off moments earlier.

“There’s no way in a million years that I thought it was offside with the first one,” he said.

“I’ve run across the defender as Chappie’s hit it. So I’ve gone to celebrate and I’ve seen the flag up out of the corner of my eye.

“I didn’t think I’d get another chance, but fortunately I did, and I rose like a salmon!

“I saw Creights get the flick-on at the near post, it just came to me and I just tried to get as much power behind it as I could, and fortunately it went in.”

The introduction of Sam Deering and Potter turned the match to bring the U’s a vital win, only their second in nine games.

The value of impact players coming off the bench has been crucial for United this season.

This was the 13th occasion a sub has come on to score for them this season, and Potter became the seventh different sub (after Matt Green, Jack Midson, James Constable, Onome Sodje, Adam Chapman and Sam Deering) to find the net.

“The gaffer told us to come on, get on the ball and run at them and try to cause a few problems, and I thought Sam was excellent when he came on. He makes things happen.

“We needed the win and having that one disallowed made it sweeter when the second one went in.

“When I score, I don’t normally celebrate but when it went in, it felt so good. ”

Potter has had a stop-start season with first glandular fever knocking him sideways and then more recently a hamstring injury halting him just when he was on fire.

“I felt I was on a good run of form before I got injured,” he said.

“I played ten games in a row and I felt good. To get injured was very disappointing and I was out for six or seven weeks.

“I made a couple of sub appearances and started against Hayes on Friday, it wasn’t the best performance.

“I just need to get my match fitness back and try to push on for the rest of the season.”

He added: “We just need to pick up a bit of momentum going into the play-offs, because our home form’s not been the best, so we need a few wins here.

“Everyone’s remaining positive, and excited about hopefully getting to Wembley and the chance to get this club back to where it should be, back in the League.”
