Morrells of Oxford Sunday League: Division 1 outfit Saxon Warriors caused a major upset as they knocked Highfield out of the League Cup 3-2 in the semi-final on Sunday.

Saxon started strongly, but squandered several chances in the opening quarter, including hitting a post and the bar through cracking efforts from Matthew Elbro and Sam Graham.

They finally took the lead after 20 minutes when Jason Caffel burst through from the centre of midfield before delicately lobbing the advancing keeper.

However, Highfield battled back and equalised ten minutes later through Sam Donaldson with a carbon copy of Caffel's goal.

But Saxon responded well, and within a minute, were awarded a penalty, only for Highfield keeper Ian Edge to save Carl Howard's weak spot-kick.

Saxon continued to dominate and were rewarded on the stroke of half-time when Dan Riley coolly side-footed home Sam Graham's pinpoint cross.

The second half was end-to-end, and Highfield equalised midway through the half through Wayne Blossom.

Just as the game looked like it was heading for extra-time, Howard robbed the Highfield defence on the halfway line and ran through to calmly slot the ball away for his 32nd of the season to make amends for his earlier penalty miss.

In the final, Saxon will meet The Nelson, who had an easier time of it as they crushed previous cup specialists Six Bells Kidlington 6-0.

Nelson took a 2-0 interval lead through Julian McCalmon and Anaclet Odhiambo and cruised away in the second period, running in four more without reply.

Ben Moses grabbed a brace, with John McMahon and Dean Simms netting the others.

In Division 1, Wolvercote moved to the top of the table with one game left when they beat visitors Jack Marston 3-1.

Mathew Spooner, Carl Smith and Andy Potter netted for the home side.

Cold Arbour Res virtually confirmed themselves as Division 2 champions by defeating nearest rivals Berinsfield 8-1 with a clinical display.

David Jennings grabbed a magnificent six goals, with Tobi Webster and Wayne Desmond netting the others.

Simon Brown scored Berinsfield's goal.

In midweek, Nelson crushed Riverside 8-0 to all-but wrap up the Premier Division title.

Once again, they took a 2-0 interval lead, then accelerated away in the second period, Julian McCalmon and Anaclet Odhiambo netting in the first period.

Odhiambo added a further four in the second half, with Ben Moses and Craig Hambridge grabbing the others.
