Oxford United boss Chris Wilder said he wasn’t disappointed to pick up only a point at Cambridge last night – even though rivals Stevenage won 6-0 away at Eastbourne.

Graham Westley’s team closed the gap at the top to four points, and did their goal difference a power of good.

Oxford, on the other hand, were given a really tough battle by relegation-threatened Cambridge, and had Anthony Tonkin sent off for a professional foul in the second half of a contest that finished 1-1.

“It’s all about the accumulation of points,” Wilder said afterwards.

“I'm not bothered by anybody else, it’s what what we do, and in the end I’m happy with a point.

“Of course we would have liked to have won, but if you can’t win, you don’t get beat. And that’s not a defeatist attitude, because we went out to win the game and even after we had Tonks sent off, we stuck two up the pitch and still went for it.

“I was disappointed in the manner of the first goal, and the sending-off, because it was self-inflicted, really.

“Rhys Day took wrong options with the first one and it was the same with Jake Wright for the second, the sending-off.

“But after going a goal behind, we battled back well, had a few chances and deservedly went in level at half-time, and we were looking to kick on.

“But fair play to Cambridge, they’ve got a lot of good players and they were always going to get a result against someone because of the manager and the players they’ve got. They’re in a false position.”

The Blue Square Premier match was notable for a brilliant save from Ryan Clarke, arching back to turn a 30-yard volley from Danny Crow over the bar.

Wilder added: “Clarkey’s made a fantastic save and then Wright made a fantastic clearance off the line. And then it hit their keeper in the face when we had a chance right at the death, but on the balance of play, a draw’s the right result.”

United were without leading scorer James Constable who has gone for a precautionary MRI scan after taking a knock on his ankle in training.

Wilder is confident the injury is not serious and the striker will be fit to face Hayes & Yeading next Tuesday, a game for which Tonkin will now be suspended.
