Darrell Bellinger has the destiny of the 2010 overall and senior men’s titles in his own hands after producing a dominant display in the penultimate round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League at Cirencester Park.

The Oxford City ace will go into the final round at Oxford next month with a slender two-point lead over clubmate Steve Male in the overall standings, and a far more comfortable seven point advantage over Abingdon Amblers’ Simon Fisher in the senior men’s competition.

Bellinger’s victory in bright and breezy conditions on Sunday saw him dominate the race from gun to tape, as he beat off the challenge of Abingdon Amblers’ Paul Fernandez by a convincing margin.

He crossed the line in 31mins 28secs – 24 seconds ahead of Fernandez – with his closest rival for the overall title Male back in third in 32.01.

It will mean a tight finish to this season’s competition, but if he can finish the last race no worse than two places behind Male, it will guarantee him the crown.

The host club put out a strong team in men’s Division 1 to beat series leaders Oxford City to victory.

But that title appears to be already wrapped up as they hold a commanding 161-point advantage over Swindon Harriers going into the last round, which will take place around Shotover, Horspath, on Sunday, March 7.

The destiny of the senior and overall women’s titles is more clear cut.

Although series leader Helen Barnes (Headington Roadrunners) was beaten into second place by Frances Briscoe, she holds all the aces going into the final round.

Briscoe, who was running for her second-claim club White Horse Harriers, was a comfortable winner, crossing the line more than 30 seconds ahead of Barnes in 23.32.

But with athletes needing to compete in a minimum of four races, she is not in the running for the title this season.

Only a disatrous last round from Barnes would deny her both the senior and overall women’s titles as she leads both competitions by eight points.

Headington Roadrunners lead the wom-en’s Division 1 standings by a huge margin of 121 points, and nothing can stop them claiming the title next month.

Banbury Harriers will claim the women’s Division 2 title after a fantastic display of packing from their three points-scoring athletes at Cirencester.

Ros Kelling, Julie Dixon and Michelle Bartlett finished fifth, sixth and seventh respectively, and they take an insurmountable lead into the last round.
