A funeral service for Harry Jones (pictured), a former president of the Oxford Bar Billiards Association, will take place at Oxford Crematorium on Friday (10.30am).

Mr Jones, 80, of Balfour Road, Blackbird Leys, died at home on Sunday, January 31.

He had two spells as the association’s president from 1968-1978 and 1984-89.

He was the men’s individual champion in 1981, and runner-up in 1978 and 1982.

Mr Jones also won the Landlords Cup in 1981, captured the pairs title with his son, Mark, in 1987, and represented Oxford in the All-England Championships for many years.

He played for the Prince of Wales (Horspath Road), the Hollybush and the West Oxford Democrats and Reform clubs, being steward at both.

His ability to set up an unassailable lead before ending his break also coined the expression “to do a Harry Jones”, which is still used to this day.

He was also publican at the Britannia Hotel in Reading, and also worked at Pressed Steel, the Post Office and for Bar Billiards Limited.

He leaves a wife, Jean, three sons, David, Mark and Gary, and 14 grandchildren.
