Oxford RFC have called up a host of former players to take on Oxford University in their special centenary fixture on Sunday, February 7.

The match at the Southern Bypass ground kicks off at 2.30pm and the Dark Blues director of rugby Steve Hill has promised to select a side that should lead to an even contest.

Oxford’s line-up will include Richard Dolan, Martin Hobday, Tony Iacono, Simon Henderson, Steve Lazenby, Richard Lee, Bill James, Clark Lawfull, Chris Murray, Alex Rabjeck, Stuart Short, Ashley Tapper and Mike Willshier.

The match is one of a series of events to mark Oxford’s centenary season.

Meanwhile, Oxford president David Bagnall will receive a commemorative plaque at Twickenham to mark the club’s centenary.

Bagnall and presidents from seven other clubs celebrating the milestone in 2009-10 will take to the field at half-time during next month’s Six Nations clash between England and Wales.

They have been invited to the match as it is Twickenham’s own centenary this year.

The other seven clubs are Bancroft, Bourneville, Huddersfield, Old Em-anuel, Broad Plain, Nottingham Trent University and Nuneaton Old Edwardians.

  • Former Oxford University Blue, fixture secretary and St Edward’s School teacher Stewart Pether has died, aged 93.

Mr Pether was a real all-rounder, also winning Blues at golf and cricket and representing the university at hockey in the late 1930s.

Educated at Magdalen College School, Pether also played rugby for Oxfordshire and Oxfordshire Nomads, who later became Oxford RFC.

There will be a memorial service for Mr Pether at Burford Parish Church on Wednesday, February 10 at 2.30pm.
