Oxford United are set to announce another new signing later today.

It will be the third capture manager Chris Wilder has made since Christmas following the arrivals at the end of last week of left-footed centre back Jake Wright, from Brighton, and midfielder Lee Fowler, who had been released by Kettering.

There is speculation that the new man today will be left back Anthony Tonkin, after sources at Cambridge revealed he would be joining Oxford this week.

United’s players trained on Saturday after the disappointment of having their New Year’s Day match at Rushden called off just over two hours before kick-off.

The postponement denied Onome Sodje and Ross Perry the opportunity of a last swansong before returning to Barnsley and Rangers respectively, although they would not have started.

“It’s been very stop-start for them and it’s been very unfortunate for Sodje that he had three games called off in his month,” said manager Chris Wilder.

“We trained on Saturday, which gave the opportunity for the new lads to mix in, and Damian Batt’s working with the others as well.

“After what has been a frustrating Christmas period, we’re now working really towards the FA Trophy and preparing for our match against Woking.”
