Oxford Harlequins will have defied expectations if they end the year third in National 3 South West.

That was the message from director of rugby John Brodley ahead of Saturday’s home clash with Weston-super-Mare (2.30).

“We would love to be finishing the year in third,” said Brodley, whose side lost their first two matches.

“If we can get five points on Saturday, that will guarantee it.

“It would beyond a lot of people’s expectations as to what we could sustain.

“We definitely deserve to be where we are, which is really pleasing.”

Flanker Johnny Olley, prop James Eckert and wing Grant Ricker return to Quins’ squad after last week’s 27-22 defeat at Coney Hill.

Brodley added: “We always said we would see where we were at Christmas. We are really pleased with our league position.

“We were a little bit disappointed with our first-half performance last week, although Coney Hill are a tough side, especially at home.

“We did still show we had ability and character to come back.”

Wing Ben Farr and lock Sam Black return as Chinnor bid to get revenge on Redingensians.

Chinnor suffered a disappointing 23-20 defeat at the Reading side in September.

Head coach Jason Bowers said: “We threw the game away that day. That was one of our more frustrating games.

“It is good to be able to pick from a full hand.

“Hopefully, we can turn into the new year with a win.”

Scrum half Ben Jones should return for Henley Hawks’ trip to Southend in National 2 South.

Jones is expected to replace Jack Shaylor, while another No 9, James Gaunt, also returns after his Oxford University coaching duties.

Back-row forward Jack Hennings should be available after recovering from concussion.
