Oxford United are pushing hard to see if they can get the gate for the Boxing Day game against Rushden & Diamonds at the Kassam Stadium up to the 10,000 mark.

That would be a fantastic achievement from the Oxfordshire public in these days when so many people are struggling with money.

By Wednesday, the club had already sold more than 6,500 advance tickets for the match.

And with the Boxing Day fixture traditionally one that attracts a large number of spectators who simply turn up on the day, they are confident of getting 9,000-plus.

The U’s are hoping supporters come along to celebrate the anniversary of Chris Wilder’s appointment as manager. His first game in charge was Boxing Day last year.

Oxford United hold the record attendance for a Conference match – 11,065 for the Boxing Day game at home to Woking three years ago.

Rushden themselves are likely to bring around 1,000 supporters.

l THE likelihood of the big promotion battle between Stevenage and Oxford United on February 20 having to be postponed increased with both teams getting favourable home draws in the second round of the FA Trophy.

The Blue Square Premier clash is scheduled for the same day as the fourth round of the Trophy, and the Trophy takes precedence.
