Two of the Conference’s best goalscorers will go head-to-head at the Abbey Stadium on Friday night.

Cambridge United’s 17-goal Chris Holroyd and Oxford United’s 18-goal James Constable look set to lead their team’s attacks after both had a rest for one game to recharge their batteries.

Both players have been capped by England C and have proved invaluable to their clubs.

If penalties are taken away, Constable – the Blue Square Premier player of the year last season – tops this season’s scoring charts with 16 goals from open play, two more than York’s Richard Brodie and three more than Holroyd.

Constable also leads the chart if league goals only are the criteria, with 17, while Brodie has struck 16 in the league, and Holroyd 14.

Rested for the FA Trophy tie against Hayes & Yeading, Constable will be itching to get back doing what he does best – finding the net. He struck in the 90th minute of his last game, when the U’s lost their FA Cup replay at Barrow.

And Holroyd netted twice in Cambridge’s 3-1 victory at home to Luton in the FA Trophy after being recalled to the side following his axing from the line-up the previous weekend in a 2-2 draw at Eastbourne.

Cambridge manager Martin Ling said: “I left Chrissy out last week just to freshen things up a bit and it has worked. His response is all you can ask for as a manager.

“He’d gone five games without a goal and probably needed that break, but the goals came again on Saturday.”

Cambridge have a very tough programme ahead of four games against three of the top four in the Blue Square Premier – Oxford, Mansfield and a Stevenage double header.

It’s the same for Oxford, as after Cambridge they then have a trip to Salisbury sandwiched in between two clashes with Rushden over the Chrismas and New Year holiday period.

Top Conference scorers: Brodie (York) 19 (5 pens), Constable (Oxford Utd) 18 (2 pens), Holroyd (Cambridge Utd) 17 (4 pens), Kedwell (AFC Wimbledon) 15 (3 pens).

League games only: Constable 17, Brodie 16, Holroyd 14, Kedwell 14.
