Masons A lead the way, despite going down 3-2 at Democrats, who are one of three teams just a point off the top.

Richard Garrett (3,840), John Patey (5,100) and Billy Hill (6,590) were in fine form for Democrats, with Dave Rose and Lewis Stratford winning for Masons.

Masons B were the big winners, beating Didcot Conservative Club 4-1.

Dave Tooke took the opening game for Didcot, beating Dave Butt 5,590-3,110.

Ernie Smith made it 1-1 with a winning break of 7,000 against Stuart Florey (5,000).

But victories for Chris Webb (14,530), Martin Skyme (3,790) and Phil Light (9,100) completed victory for Masons.

Berinsfield make up the chasing pack – but missed the chance to go top after losing 3-2 at Kennington.

Mark Trafford (17,400, break 11,420), Kevin Godfrey (11,830, break 10,570) and Steven Sheard (13,310, break 11,070) were on song for Kennington, with Geoff Mace (7,490) and Craig Mace (4,710) picking up Berinsfield’s points.

Things are almost as tight in Section 2, with one point separating three teams.

Gladiators A lead the way on points difference after winning 5-0 at home to Shelley.

Bob Pincombe (6,950) Dave Jarman (4,440) and Keith Gardner (10,810) shone.

They overtake Comrades, who lost 3-2 at home to Gladiators B, despite Simon Ellam scoring 16,380.

Dolphin kept in touch after a 3-2 win at Headington Conservative Club.

Oxford C went down 3-2 at Reading C in the first leg of the Inter-Area C side competition.

John Patey (5,670) and Terry Green (5,140) won to give Oxford hope for the return leg.

Oxford Ladies lost 3-2 at Northants in their return leg, but went through 38,540-26,270 on aggregate – with Pauline Withey and Mel Standbridge shining.
