Cambridge University hope to have gained a psychological advantage ahead of the Nomura Varsity Match after defeating Oxford University in the ‘Grudgeby’ Rowing Challenge.
Three members of each squad, respectively coached by Oxford oarsman Andy Hodge and Cambridge Blue Tom James, battled it out in a 1,500m indoor rowing relay challenge at Molesey Boat Club in Surrey.
Lock Ian Kench gave Oxford an early lead on his 500m leg, but Predee Anuvatnujotikul brought Cambridge back on level terms against prop Ricky Lutton.
James Greenwood held off Dark Blues skipper Dan Rosen in the finale.
