Aston Rowant say justice has been done after winning their appeal against a points deduction for an on-field punch-up.

Rowant are confirmed as winners of Division 2 West in the Serious Cricket Home Counties Premier League, winning promotion to the top flight.

The village club, who finished top of the table, looked like being demoted to third place following a 25-point fine imposed after their Australian all-rounder Tim Miles clashed with Basing-stoke & North Hants’ Dean Nurse on the pitch.

Despite the incident happening on August 22, the league did not hold a proper disciplinary hearing until October 15 – and that after their first attempt was discovered to be unconstitutional.

In addition to the deduction, both Miles and Nurse were banned for two years, with one-year suspended, while Rowant captain Wesley Morrick and his opposite number Russell Droy were reprimanded At the appeal, Rowant successfully challenged the verdict, but will enter Division 1 with a suspended 40-point penalty that will come into force should they transgress again next season.

The league also dropped the reprimand against Morrick.

Rowant did not challenge the ban on Miles, but Nurse's ban was reduced from a year to the first 13 league games of 2010.

Rowant’s chairman, Gary Condon, said: “Justice has been done. We are quite happy with it. We will just draw a line under it and move on.

“We won the league by winning more games than anyone else. The thought of having that taken away from us would have been very tough.

“We are in the top league now and have that to look forward to.

“It means that we won’t be able to play in the national village knockout, but promotion was something we wanted.

“It shows the strength of Oxfordshire cricket to have another team in Division 1.”

Condon did not wish to comment on the disciplinary process, which many feel was badly handled by the league. But he was pleased that Morrick’s his reprimand had been removed.

Morrick was also delighted, saying: “I’m overjoyed. We are just glad to get it over with.”

The league were unavailable for comment.
