Oxford's Jason Plato has been awarded the British Racing Drivers Club’s silver star for a record-breaking fifth time following his impressive display in this year's British Touring Car Championship.

Plato had to settle for second place in hs RML-powered Chevrolet Lacetti, behind champion Colin Turkington.

But it was a season in which he passed several important career milestones, including his 300th BTCC start and 50th career win.

Taking into account his best 12 finishes of the year, in which he secured seven wins, 16 podiums and four pole positions, the Oxfordshire racer won the silver star with 212 points, eight clear of Turkington, in second place.

Plato has now taken the award a record-breaking five times, in 2001, 2004, 2007, 2008 and 2009 He will receive his prize at the BRDC annual awards evening in December.

The Silver Star award first came to fruition in 1977.

Points are awarded to members competing in the UK’s three major motorsport championships including British Touring Car Championships, British GT and Formula 3.
