After my success recently in the shape of a 10.3.0 barbel on my second trip to the Kennet at Burghfield, my last visit brought me down to earth with a bang.

I spent two days on the river and failed to catch a barbel, although plenty of other fish came my way.

A couple of big barbel, one weighing 14.6.0, were caught from the stretch by other anglers, but my faithful maggots let me down.

Now I’m not sure whether to stick with them or try small pellets or casters. I will probably persevere with them as you can just end up chasing your tail and getting even more confused.

l Orchid Lake, near Dorchester, is best known for its huge carp, but just at the back of the main lake is a smaller water called the Club Lake which holds some very big catfish – as Andy Berry from Somerset found out.

He spent five days on the water and landed six cats – two 30’s, two 20’s and a best that set a new venue record, weighing in at 53.3.0.

He used tuna groundbait and then fished a squid and lobworm cocktail, popped up 18 inches over the top. For up-to-date information on the venue, phone 01865 341810.
