OWNERS Shane Lee and Melvin Shorter were full of praise for their charge Jolly Poacher after the brindle and white dog steamed home to land the Tech-Shop Uk Maiden Derby at the Stadium on Saturday.

It was only the dog's second race and Lee said: “That was some run,and to think he missed his break.”

Poacher, originally named King of Anfield before the name change last month, kicked his rivals into touch with a devastating show of early and back straight pace to spreadeagle his field in landing the £1500 booty.

It was also a triumph for Oxford handler Richard Yeates, who mainly concentrates on quality in his High Wycombe kennels.

Only Poacher and ex-Irish hope Advantage Johnny interested the bookies as Poacher went off 4-5 favourite with Johnny on 7-4.

Poacher became the first Oxford winner of the event when coming home five and a half lengths clear of Johnny in an impressive 26.59.

Poacher aims to follow up with victory in the Complete Property Maintenance Care Oxfordshire Stakes as the heats get under way tonight.

Yeates also tracks Tonetta Balbao and Lily Rules.

All Poacher has to do is trap and and the rest of his rivals in heat three should be doing the chasing.

Prolific winner Brickfield Class is in the hunt as is the former Angie Kibble-trained Heavenly Club.

The first two qualify in each heat and the final is next Saturday.
