Lee Jackson will be looking to continue his rich vein of form when he tees off in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship at Dundonald Links next week.

The North Oxford pro made it through to the event near Troon with a strong second-place finish in the Eastern Region qualifier and then won the BB&O Professional Championship.

West Berks pro Paul Simpson, who lives in Witney, a good friend of Jackson, will be the defending champion at Dundonald.

“I have seen it on the website and it looks quite daunting, but I’m looking forward to it and I’m going to enjoy it come what may,” said Jackson.

“I don’t mind links golf. I used to play it a lot, but have not played it for quite a while.

“It’s a different type of golf – you’ve got to go out and keep the ball low.”

Jackson returned to North Oxford last year to rejoin the club he first played at as a junior.

“The reason why we are in this game is to play a bit and when we play well we get ambitions and when we don’t play well we’re glad to go back to teaching,” he said.

One man delighted at Jackson reaching the final is dad Peter, who will be caddying for his son.

Jackson jnr said: “He’s really looking forward to it, he couldn’t wait to book a week off work.”

Other Oxfordshire pros competing in the Glenmuir PGA Professional Championship are Adam Souter (The Wychwood), David Boyce (The Springs) and Nigel Barker (Heathfield Golf Centre).

THE BB&O Golf Partnership is expanding the country’s first junior academy programme.

Nine academy centres were opened in the region this year, with Studley Wood, Hadden Hill and Witney Lakes the Oxfordshire venues.

Next year, the partnership hopes to increase this to 12 with 300 youngsters receiving coaching.

Recruiting for this will take place in Oxon at Studley Wood on Sunday, August 30 with boys and girls nine to 16 welcome to attend.
