A disputed late penalty by Billy Beechers gave Abingdon United a 3-2 win in an eventful British Gas Business Southern League Division 1 South & West game against Cirencester United, who finished with nine men.

The visitors took the lead after three minutes. Abingdon players stopped, thinking the ball had gone out of play and let Steve Davis chest over it the line.

Abingdon struck back within two minutes as Luke Holden met Mark Janes’s pass over the top, and fired between the keeper and a post.

The hosts took the lead when Tom Franklin powerfully fired home a free-kick, awarded for a foul on Pablo Haysham on the edge of the box. Early in the second half, Cirencester made it 2-2 with a neat shot-on-the turn from Scott Griffin.

Ten minutes from time, Beechers was brought down by Cirencester keeper Tom King, who was sent off for the foul.

The arguments continued after Beechers put away the spot-kick. He was struck by Griffin’s elbow and the Cirencester player was also shown the red card.

Abingdon Utd: Warrell, Janes, Weedon, Carnell, Franklin, Biddle, McCalmon, Beechers (Peirson 83), Herbert, Holden, Haysham. Subs not used: Odhiambo, Booker.
