If it’s not ice, frost and snow, it’s severe flooding!

After all that snow, our rivers were put on Flood Watch by the Environment Agency last week and so once again matches were either cancelled or moved to the Oxford Canal.

I was out and about last Sunday and most rivers, including the Thames, Cherwell and Thame, were out across the fields.

With only a few weeks left to the end of the river season, prospects don’t look good.

The Oxford Carp Winter League match went ahead at Court Farm, Aldermaston, after being on and off for seemingly ages because of the weather, and there was a full house of 20 on the water.

The fish were in pockets, but the winner, Paul Dann, made it look easy when he put 103.8.0 of carp on the scales. He fished the pole at 16 metres with corn hard on the bottom.

Sat next to him was Dave Hawkins, who also fished at 16 metres but instead of corn, used expander pellets on the hook and fed micro pellet. He had 91.6.0 of carp to finish second.

Predator's Matt Ryman, pegged on a narrow section of the lake which meant he could only fish eight metres out, fed liquidised bread with punch on the hook to catch 63.2.0 of carp.

Stable Lake at Kirtlington Fisheries was the venue for the 12 anglers who fished the latest Tackley match.

Alternating between bread and maggot with a groundbait feeder cast to the island, Mick Merry was the clear winner with 54.0.0 of carp and bream.

Also on the feeder with red maggot, John Spencer caught 35.4.0 of bream for second place, while feeder and maggot also worked for Garry Cooke. who caught a third-placed 19.8.0 of carp and bream.

Melting snow running off into the lake made it a struggle for half the competitors in Witney fished their last match in their calender, the Last Chance Cup over at Barford.

There was a good turn-out of 17 with plenty of fish coming to the net.

Pegged on the canal, Joe Welch landed six carp for a top weight of 26.2.0, using a 1.4lb bottom to a size 20 hook and maggot.

The next two weights came from the moat. Dave Williams was second with a net of roach weighing 13.8.0 on maggot, followed by Nick Morley with 12.10.0 of roach also on maggot.

With the Seacourt Stream over its banks, the North Oxford AS committee verses members match was switched to the canal at King's Bridge and proved hard work for the eight anglers.

The water was very clear at the start, but after a couple of boats came through, it switched itself on.

One of the oldest members of the club and certainly on the match scene, Ted Cummings, triumphed with three chub worth 7.12.0. He was up on the rushes and fished the pole straight down the middle with red maggot on the hook.

A perch and three roach on pinkie gave Anthony Tompkins a second-placed 2.6.0, and third with a perch weighing 1.8.8 was Roger Bateman.

The Kidlington Pairs match was fished by 13 on the canal at Wolvercote Green, where the water was a nice colour, but freezing cold.

Jason Bean had four decent perch on worm over chop and then switched to punch and had some skimmers and roach out for a winning 6.5.0.

Second with a net of roach and skimmers on punch was Bob Hobbs, followed by Giles Cuss with 4.2.0 of perch and roach on pinkie.

Pairs Cup winners: J Bean & A Middleton.

The ten matchmen who fished the Sutton Courtenay Hewer Challenge Cup on Culham Cut have to thank the lock keeper for getting rid of all the ice, although according to John Percival, it did not improve the fishing much.

Fishing worm over chop, Steve Wheatley had a perch and a skimmer for a winning 2.12.0.

A perch and a skimmer on maggot weighing 2.8.0 gave Mark Shepherd second place, and third with 1.8.0 was Bob Gosbee with a perch on worm over chop.
