Abingdon Utd 1 (Peirson 85)

Bishops Cleeve 0

Richard Peirson’s goal five minutes from time gave Abingdon a much-needed three points at Northcourt Road in Division 1 South & West.

The visitors were more lively early on, former Oxford United striker Julian Alsop particularly threatening with Cleeve’s long-ball game.

But Abingdon went close midway through the half when James Organ’s volley was deflected just wide.

Tom Franklin headed into the side netting and Luke Holden’s effort went the same way.

At the other end, Abingdon keeper Sam Warrell gathered a stinging Ben Gascoyne drive at the second attempt.

Holden went close again, while Declan Benjamin’s spectacular overhead kick also went wide.

The second half saw fewer chances, although Warrell had to be on his toes to deny Gascoyne on the hour.

Holden was denied by the Cleeve keeper, before he had to go off with an eye injury.

As full-time approached, Peirson grabbed the winner.

Substitute Mark Janes closed down Cleeve’s right back and squared the ball for Peirson, who hammered home.
