A goal three minutes into injury time gave Oxfordshire Under 18s a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Gwent in their South West Counties Youth Championship match.

An inswinger corner by substitute Lewis Brown (Oxford & Cherwell College) was dropped by the Gwent keeper, the ball running loose for Luke Carnell (Brackley) to turn in from six yards out.

The first half saw little between the sides, with both keepers saving long-range efforts.

Jack Longford (Brackley) tried his luck with two free-kicks from distance, seeing both fly just over the bar.

However, Oxon had a let-off in the 34th minute when a corner was deflected onto a post before bouncing away from danger.

Rhys Veal (Oxford City) was forced to clear from just under his own crossbar after the break, and Oxon were becoming stronger as the game progressed.

Jack Johnson (Kidlington) just missed the target with a lob from 25 yards out, but with the game well into injuiry time, Carnell won the match from close range.

Oxfordshire Under 16s enjoyed a more one-sided victory, beating Berks & Bucks 4-1.

Jordan Ayris (Chesterton) put Oxon ahead in the sixth minute, only for the visitors to hit back and draw level.

Luke Manning (Witney Vikings) then put Oxfordshire ahead with a piece of sublime skill.

With his back to goal, Manning chipped the ball over the defender before running through to fire home past the goalkeeper.

Two minutes into the second half, Michael Hedges (Witney Vikings) made a great save to preserve his side’s lead.

And Oxon then made the game safe when Paul Banks (Witney Vikings) ran onto a through ball from Sam Doherty (Witney Vikings) and finished clinically.

Doherty then rounded off a cracking team performance with their fourth goal in injury time.
