John Smith, a long-serving stalwart of Oxfordshire rugby, has died aged 75.

Smith's was a loyal and hard-working supporter of the game over three lengthy periods, and his contribution will be much missed by both his club, Banbury and the county.

On leaving Christ's Hospital School, he joined Banbury where he made such an immediate impression that he gained selection for Oxfordshire on the wing.

Smith made his debut at just 18 and gained his county cap the year after.

He went on to make over 30 appearances for Oxon and captained Banbury in 1959 and 1960.

A career move took him to Kenya in 1962 where he played for Nairobi Nondescripts, and also reported on rugby for the East African Standard.

On returning to Oxfordshire in 1972, he joined Banbury's committee, becoming president in 1980.

Smith served the county in numerous capacities and was president from 1987 to 1989.

Following this, he continued with his committee work and will be particularly remembered as being the county's international tickets officer.

In 2002, in recognition of his services he was made an honorary life member of the Oxfordshire RFU and was also presented with a medal by the Lord Lieutenant of Oxfordshire for his volunteer commitment.

Smith's funeral took place at Bodicote church, near Banbury, on July 7.
