IT wasn’t to be eleventh heaven as the Cheetahs went down fighting at Redcar on Friday night, although they did claim the all-important bonus point.

Oxford were already up against it with ex-Redcar heat leader Lewis Kerr still sidelined with his collarbone injury, while Scott Nicholls was also forced to withdraw in the morning.

To be fair to team manager Peter Schroeck, the two excellent guests delivered the points, however the balance of the team was just not quite there.

Nicholls’ withdrawal was the subject of some nasty speculation that he had not taken his place in the team to be a part of the Speedway World Cup television coverage in Poland.

Schroeck was clearly frustrated by this, saying: “It was a very genuine family reason and I have heard all day long he was going to Poland for his World Cup media duties, which I think is absolutely disgraceful.”

Anyone who knows Nicholls will also know he is far too professional to play those sorts of games.

Sadly, he shared the dreadful news that his mother had passed away on Friday morning, posting on social media: “She was the best mum I could’ve ever wished for. I’m so grateful I got to tell her how much I love her and how thankful I am for everything she has done.”

Everyone in the speedway world sends their condolences to Scott and all of his family at this time.

Henry Atkins had a nasty fall while challenging for the lead in a crucial heat eight and was unable to take any further part in the meeting.

A belt coming adrift was the cause and he was philosophical after the meeting, saying: “I have never had this issue in six years of using belt drives, so I will be checking them in future.

“I have hurt my back a little bit and will get that sorted so should be good for Wednesday.”

Oxford remain at the top of the Championship, seven points clear of Glasgow, who won against Poole on Sunday evening.

Cheetahs need to sting Scorpions

Scunthorpe are the visitors to Sandy Lane this week and will be looking for revenge after losing out in the Super Heat when the Cheetahs visited them last month.

Currently third in the league, this will not be an easy match and the Scorpions have already claimed a big away win at Edinburgh.

Oxford need just a win to claim all three points available and are boosted with the return of Kerr to the side after his collarbone injury. Oxford also bring Luke Killeen back into the Cheetahs side.

Ryan Kinsley remains a key part of the Chargers side and has been a vital points scorer in many of the Cheetahs victories this season.
