Oxford City came good at the death to register a very useful 6-3 win over North Oxford A in Mixed Division 1 of the OLTA's Wilson 3-Pair League.

City, North Oxford and Woodstock have all made a strong start to the season so far.

There was nothing between the sides in the City v North Oxford tussle with the teams locked at 3-3 after the second round of matches.

But City's three pairs came up trumps in all of their final rubbers.

Antony D'Pinto and Barbara Gibbins held their nerve in a tie-break to triumph 6-3, 7-6 against their North counterparts, Chris Rogers and Hannah Booth.

And Mike Millers and Jo Love staged an impressive comeback after being blown off court in their first set, to defeat Mark Leslie and Louise Purton 1-6, 6-1, 6-2 to seal City's late victory.

Woodstock too were in good form as they comfortably saw off Banbury 8-1, with Manoj Gujral and Nicola Casey unbeaten through the afternoon.

Only Matthew Hunter and Jacqui Lynes had any real joy for Banbury, halving two of their matches.

Witney maintained their 100 per cent record in Division 2 with a straightforward 7-2 win at North Oxford C.

Paul Valentine and Ally Morgan won three of their six sets 6-4, and inflicted the dreaded bagel in their other three sets - winning each of them to love.

Woodstock B are the nearest challengers to Witney after their 8.5-0.5 success at Oxford City B.

Top pair Chris and Jo Corfield were seldom troubled, and even Woodstock's third pair, Will Thomas and Liz Gilkes, won one of their sets to love against City's first pair of Alistair Gillan and Lynne Roberts, after taking the first on a tie-break.

3-PAIR LEAGUE RESULTS Mixed Div 1: Woodstock 8, Banbury A 1; Oxford City 6, North Oxford A 3. Div 2: North Oxford C 2, Witney 7; Oxford City B 0.5, Woodstock B 8.5.
