Frilford Heath's Ashley Walton held his nerve to win one of the most closely contested BB&O Amateur Championships in recent times.

Walton, who was also champion in 2002, parred the last two holes at Castle Royle to pip home player Tom Wilde by one shot.

Rounds of 76, 67, 70 and 74 gave Walton a one-under-par total of 287.

Walton, Wilde, Darren Walton (Woburn), Adam Glass (Caversham Heath) and Adam Wootton (Oxford City) all had a chance of victory with two holes to play.

But only Walton was able to shoot level par when the pressure was on.

Wootton finished fifth on 289, with Kirtlington's Sandy Bolton (294) tied sixth and Chipping Norton's Mathew Johnson (295) eighth.

  • Adam Wootton continued his sparkling form by setting an unofficial course record at Southfield during Oxford City's gala weekend.

Wootton shot an eight-under-par 62, which bettered the previous mark of 63 set by Ian Bound, to help his team claim victory in the four-ball event.

The 20-year-old holed all his putts, but the score won't officially stand as he needed to achieve it in an individual competition.

"The way he is playing, it will only be a matter of time before he does it again," said Southfield secretary Colin Whittle.

  • Former North Oxford member Mark Rummings today tees off at the PGA Professional National Championship in the USA.

Rummings, who is also a Leadbetter coach, was one of eight qualifiers for the 312-player event at Reynolds Plantation, Greensboro, Georgia.

A top-20 finish would see him qualify for the USPGA Championship at Oakland Hills in August and gain exemption to the second round of tour qualifying school.

Rummings is looking to build on a promising 2007, which saw him play two USPGA Tour events - the PODS Championship and the Arnold Palmer Invitational.
