Matt Day says he and Billy Turley have shaken hands and made up after their amazing bust-up as they left the field at Plainmoor.

Turley vented his full fury at full back Day as the players walked off down the tunnel following Oxford United's 3-2 defeat against second-placed Torquay - after they had led 1-0 inside the first minute.

Day was at fault for what turned out to be the game-changing second goal by ex-U's striker Chris Zebroski.

He drifted into the middle when a cross came over from the left, leaving Zebroski unmarked to fire home and put the Gulls 2-1 ahead, and they added a third two minutes later to wrap up the points.

Turley and Day were virtually squaring up to each other on the side of the pitch, and Adam Murray got in between to break them apart.

But afterwards, a contrite Day said it would all be forgotten by the morning.

"We've shaken hands and made up in the dressing room afterwards.

"It was at the end of the game and we were very disappointed to lose the match. No-one wants to make mistakes, but unfortunately I made one for the second goal, just as Quinny (Barry Quinn) maybe made a mistake for the first and Michael Howard did for the third.

"Billy had a go at me, but I said to him, he makes mistakes, we all make mistakes. I didn't have a blast at him when he made mistakes recently.

"All season we've shown character, but this result is a big disappointment because we wanted to go the rest of the season unbeaten. It was basically three individual mistakes that cost us."

United manager Darren Patterson said he didn't mind his players getting aggressive towards each other as Turley and Day did.

"Good . . . they should be having a go at each other. We're here to win football matches, for goodness sake, and they shouldn't be happy that we've conceded goals for all the workrate and the effort we've put in. It was just individual stupidity that killed us.

"It's harsh, but at the end of the day, it's football.

"The second goal was simple. If Luke Foster heads it away and Matty Day stays where he should stay, we don't concede. Then even if Luke doesn't win the header, it's still OK if Matt's in the right position. He didn't need to go into the middle to try and win the header as well.

"We comfortably should have won that game, and we would have done, had we not made those three mistakes. But that's why Torquay are top of the league and we're mid-table.

"Winners are consistent in what they do and they don't keep making errors. It's harsh, I know, but it tells me a story."

Craig McAllister had fired United in front just 51 seconds into his return, only to injure his knee before half-time, and he was unable to come out for the second half.

"We had a few injuries tonight, quite a few knocks," Patterson said.
