Alex Jeannin described the red card he received at Northwich on Saturday as "a joke".

The Oxford United left back was shown a second yellow - and consequently a red - after Northwich's Richard Battersby came up to him and stood head-to-head with the Frenchman, who was upset by the nasty-looking shoulder injury that Eddie Anaclet had suffered.

Jeannin said: "I really don't know myself what happened.

"Eddie had dislocated his shoulder and was screaming on the floor and that guy came by and said some bad words to him.

"So I just came to him and said you should say sorry to him, and he came face to face to me. We didn't do anything nasty together or anything and everything was gone. I was ready to go on and the referee called me and booked me for 'bad conduct'.

"I really didn't know what happened exactly and I lost it, I suppose.

"I don't really understand it, but we know that you've got to deal with it. In this league the referees are very poor and it's always happening. You can see the red card which shouldn't have happened with Pettefer, and again with me. It's a joke."

Jeannin will be banned for one match and misses next Saturday's FA Trophy first round tie at home to Tonbridge Angels. He is available for tomorrow night's FA Cup replay at Southend.

He added: "We won't play in the league for another three weeks, so we wanted to come here to get a win.

"We did very bad for the first 45 minutes, did better in the second half, were unfortunate that we didn't score and we lost that game."
