KIRSTY Miller, Oxfordshire’s sportswoman of the year for 2017, began the new season with a commanding display at the English Open Taekwon-Do Championships in Guildford.

It was a successful competition for both Didcot and Wantage clubs, who brought back a host of medals.

Leading the entries from Didcot TKD, Miller took gold in sparring and pattern categories, cementing her position as the leading 4th Dan competitor.

Also winning gold medals for Didcot were England captain Ricky De Winton and Lucas Betteridge, while there were silvers for Alison Fisher, Lisamarie Betteridge, Harrison Moore, and Sienna Carbonari.

Seren Fullbrook took bronze, along with Connor Fisher, and debutants Brooke Claridge and Otto Spencer.

Wantage Taekwondo School (Vale TKD) recorded their most successful medal haul at the championships.

Their 21 competitors brought back 14 golds, three silvers and six bronzes, totalling 54 points with the 21 competitors who entered for Vale TKD.

Senior gold medals were won by Sean Mcintyre and instructor Carl Davis, who also took a silver medal.

Victoria Davis and Marek Allen also captured silvers.

In the junior section, there were also gold medals for Charlie Rhodes, Kuba Pienkos, Benny Stoten, Aaron Woodsend and Iva Ferencska.

Aisha Macey, Gabreilla Rhodes, Lilly Bunting and Sami Grimes claimed double golds over multiple events (patterns and sparring).

A silver medal went to Ryan Woodsend, while Lilly Emptage, Brendan England and Finlay Bridle won bronze.

Davis said: “I’m very proud of our results, as never before have so few competitors from one Taekwondo school achieved so many gold medals in one national championship.”
