SIMON Eastwood says Oxford United’s sole focus now is Wembley – but it is not on the Checkatrade Trophy final.

The goalkeeper is looking forward to the clash with Coventry City next month following Wednesday night’s 3-2 win against Luton Town.

It will be his first appearance at the national stadium, but Eastwood is hoping it is not a one-off this season.

United have eight league games before then, starting with Bristol Rovers’ visit to the Kassam Stadium tomorrow.

And it is the pursuit of a play-off place in Sky Bet League One which the 27-year-old knows will be the only target this month.

“To get a chance at Wembley is something no-one would turn their nose up at,” he said.

“No disrespect to the competition, but I want to play there in the play-off final, which would be massive for the club.

“There’s that many games coming up, the manager has said we’ve got to forget about that.

“We’ve got 14 games left in the league and until the final is the next game, we’ll look to the league games instead.”

The win at Luton was United’s 11th from 14 games in 2017 – a run of form which has given them plenty of confidence.

It meant even after the Hatters fought back from 2-0 down to level, Eastwood was not surprised the U’s grabbed a late winner through Marvin Johnson.

He said: “With the momentum we’ve built, we have found a way to stay in games.

“At Luton their crowd was up at 2-2 and if that had happened at the start of the season we would have gone into our shells, but the manager keeps saying we need to learn to deal with disappointments in games.”

United’s cup commitments meant they could only look on while many of their rivals played for points on Tuesday.

Results, including Rovers’ 1-1 draw at Bolton Wanderers, broadly went their way.

While the gap to the top-six stretched to six points, Michael Appleton’s side have up to three games in hand.

Rovers, one point and two places below the U’s in the table, won the reverse fixture 2-1 in August, but Eastwood pointed to the huge strides made by him and his teammates since.

He said: “Now we have more of a settled side and everyone knows each other’s strengths and weaknesses.

“But it will be tough because they’re next to us in the table.”
