OXFORD United were humbled by the incredible turnout from their supporters at Middlesbrough, according to skipper John Lundstram.

The visitors were backed by 3,376 fans, which, thanks to increased allocations for the Emirates FA Cup, was the largest travelling contingent at the Riverside this season.

Their 460-mile round trip was rewarded with a terrific comeback in the second half, when they celebrated two goals in just over a minute.

While Lundstram was gutted a late goal saw United lose 3-2, the midfielder thought everyone representing the Sky Bet League One side could hold their heads high.

He said: “We were always going to go for it, that’s the Oxford way, and I’m hugely proud of everyone involved, especially the fans.

“They were unbelievable. With the money they must have paid to get up here I’m humbled by the support they showed.”

The character shown by the underdogs ensured the away fans were not the only ones applauding the U’s players off after the final whistle.

Lundstram said: “As we were walking off all the Middlesbrough fans were clapping us.

“That just shows how well we did in the second half and credit to them for showing us that respect.

“A couple of their players said we were unlucky and wished us all the best for the rest of the season, which is a nice touch.

“Middlesbrough showed us respect by playing as strong a team as they did – there were massive players on the pitch against little old Oxford.

“I’m thankful we put in a performance against a team like that.

“We will take confidence from the fact we’re disappointed to be beaten by a Premier League team.”
