OXFORDSHIRE rowers featured prominently as Great Britain’s Olympic squads were announced.

Almost three-quarters of the 43-strong squad to travel to Rio 2016 had links to the area, including Oxford’s Andrew Triggs Hodge and Wheatley’s Frances Houghton.

The women’s eight included seven members with Oxfordshire links.

The men’s squad contained several Oxford University Blues, including captain Constantine Louloudis, while Henley’s Leander Club boasted 22 members in the squad.

Also securing his place on the plane to Brazil was Lawrence Clarke, after making the Olympic qualifying time in the 110m hurdles at the British Championships in Birmingham.

Clarke, from Christmas Common, near Watlington, finished second in a time of 13.44secs to earn his place.

Oxford City Lions claimed a rare double triumph and booked a European spot, adding the FA National Futsal League title to their FA Futsal Cup triumph.

Having collected their first major trophy with a tense 6-4 cup final win over Genesis in Manchester, Lions travelled to St George’s Park looking to cap a stellar season.

After defeating reigning champions Baku United 5-3 in the semi-final, Lions sealed the title with a penalty shoot-out victory over Helvecia following a 3-3 draw, securing a spot in the UEFA Futsal Cup for the first time.
