A DELIGHTED Jade O’Dowda says competing at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would be a dream come true after retaining her national heptathlon crown.

The Oxford City star won the under 17 title at the England Combined Events Championships in Bedford last weekend, with a personal best overall score of 5,010 points.

As a result, O’Dowda has risen to seventh in the all-time British heptathlon rankings for her age group.

And after watching some of her role models compete at the Games in Rio, the 16-year-old now has her sights set on Tokyo in four years’ time.

She said: “One of my all-time goals is to compete at an Olympics, it would be a dream.

“To be able to watch Jess Ennis-Hill, one of my idols, (compete at Rio) over the last week, was really inspiring.

“I will go for it (Tokyo). I will keep trying, but we will see what next season holds.”

O’Dowda, who is coached by Marcia and Ian Marriott at Horspath, headed to a wet and windy Bedford as defending champion.

She started well by setting the joint-fastest time of 11.47secs in the 80m hurdles.

But the conditions affected O’Dowda’s high jump as she could only manage 1.56m, dropping her to fourth.

However, she responded well to win the shot with a pb of 12.10 and never looked back.

A strong 200m (26.09) was followed by a best of 5.76 in the long jump and a solid performance in the javelin (29.63) kept her ahead of Edinburgh’s Holly McArthur, heading into the 800m.

O’Dowda had an 11-second cushion over McArthur and she finished within ten seconds of her nearest rival to ensure she took the title.

“I am really proud,” she said.

“The weather was awful – it was all over the place.

“I was a little bit under pressure (being defending champion), but sometimes I quite like that.”

Marcia Marriott added: “I feel elated, but it was nail-biting.

“Points did not come into it, what we wanted was for her to retain her title.

“It is special.”

O’Dowda is in action again this weekend in the 80m hurdles at the England Under 17 Championships at Bedford.

City’s Katie Hetherington and Banbury’s Zoe Pollock, who are both coached by Marriott, also competed, finishing 15th and 16th respectively.

In the under 15 girls’ hexathlon, Elizabeth Eskender, of Banbury, came 38th.
