THEO Brophy-Clews learnt a great deal in his first full season as a professional but is fully aware the hard work has only just begun.

The Wallingford teenager has enjoyed a whirlwind 12 months with London Irish since finishing his A-Levels at Abingdon School.

Brophy-Clews, 19, signed a new contract with relegated Irish at the beginning of the year until 2018 and made quite an impression on the first team.

The fly half went on to make five starts in the Aviva Premiership.

“I think in the games I played I was put under a lot more pressure,” he said.

“I made a lot more mistakes, but I learnt a lot out of it.

“It was pretty physical, I got whacked if I made the wrong decision.

“For a fly half, tactically you have to learn as much as you can and that was the biggest thing.

“I have learned a lot from playing against some very good players.”

Brophy-Clews was also selected for England at the World U20 Championship earlier this month, but he only played one game in their victorious campaign after suffering a foot injury.

He has since undergone surgery and will miss the start of the Greene King IPA Championship season.

But, speaking before his injury, the teenager was under no illusions he would have a battle on his hands to play.

He said: “I will have to earn it.

“There are a lot of good players coming in and when I get back to the club environment I will have to work hard to get some game time.”
