JONATHAN Cornish moved into the lead of the senior men standings after the third round of the Oxford Mail Cross Country League.

The White Horse Harrier, who has competed in only two of the three races, finished third in a wet and muddy race at Horspath.

Cornish completed the hilly route to finish in 33mins 21secs, just under two minutes adrift of winner Steve Naylor, of Woodstock Harriers, and 17 seconds behind second-placed Nyle Clinton, of Swindon Harriers.

He is one point ahead of David Bell in the standings, but the Cirencester runner has finished all three races.

In the team standings, Oxford City A hold a 514-point lead over Newbury A after they had four runners in the top ten.

Abingdon’s Paul Fernandez was the first Vet 40 home in sixth and leads the standings, stretching his lead over Cirencester’s Adrian Williams to six points.

In the women’s, just three points separate the top three in the Vet 35 competition.

Woodstock’s Rachel Masser finished fifth in a race won by Oxford City’s Gemma Bridge, but now shares the lead on seven points with Jessica Franklin, of Newbury, who took third.

Alchester’s Sarah Rendell is only three points back in third after crossing seventh, edging Eynsham’s Hannah Hale by just a second.

In the under 15 and 17 boys race, Ben West, of Bicester, finished second behind Swindon Harrier Will Crisp.

Meanwhile, Radley’s Benjamin Cumberland beat title rival Skip Snelson by 17 seconds in the under 13 event.

He has opened up a one-point lead over the Banbury runner heading into the fourth round at Cirencester Park on February 7.

Oxford’s Henry Channon edged a tight under 11 event, with just ten seconds covering himself and Radley duo Quinn Miell-Ingram and William D’Arcy.

In the under 15 and 17 girls’ race, Abingdon’s Fiona Bunn dominated proceedings to take victory by 43 seconds, while Olivia Martin, of Oxford, edged Swindon’s Harriett Hillman by just two seconds in the under 11 event.
