The only winner from our game away at Eastbourne Borough at the weekend was the wind.

Considering we had the lead at half time and had performed well, it was hard not be disappointed coming away with only a point.

The attendance for the scrappy game of football was 466.

It amazes me that more people turn up to watch a game of football in these coastal conditions than our beautiful passing based style of football at Marsh Lane.

The first half was a battle more with the weather than the opposition. Goal kicks ended up over the stands, long passes drifted out of play and crosses ended up behind the goals as the wind had it’s fun.

Half chances came and went but midway through the half, Bradley Bubb opened the scoring.

Following a short corner routine with Kynan Isaac, I was able to beat the defender before squaring the ball to Bubb who instinctively fired the ball into the top corner of the near post.

According to the Eastbourne Borough match report, our goal in the first half was slightly more than we deserved. I have no idea what game they were watching.

Marlon Jackson also came close on his first start since rejoining the club from Tranmere but the keeper saved well with his feet. We had the chances to score but simply didn’t capitalise. Eastbourne on the other hand, hardly tested Laurie Walker.

The second half started exactly the same except it was a little darker and Eastbourne were kicking into the wind.

Due to the weather and the home side causing us little threat, we began to sit a little deeper than usual. This encouraged the Eastbourne to come on to us a little more, leaving more area behind their defence for us to counter attack into.

Our plan nearly worked as a quick counter down the left hand side resulted in Darren Pond watching his fierce volley unluckily smash against the crossbar.

We should have scored more than one in the game but not taking advantage, whilst we are dominating a match has definitely been the problem for us this year.

With twenty minutes to go, our lead disappeared and we only have ourselves to blame.

After a poor free kick on the edge of their area, Eastbourne immediately travelled down the left hand side.

Their attacking left back went on a tricky run before falling in the area and watching the referee point to the spot. The penalty was confidently dispatched and the home side were fortunately level despite what their match report says.

Omari Sterling-James came on late in the game and his wonderful effort from a free kick resulted in the bar once again saving the home side.

After a professional and commanding first half performance, our second half didn’t have the same intensity.

Despite the coastal weather playing a big role, it is another game we will look back at and believe we should have collected all three points.

The draw on Saturday keeps us in third position in the table with an important FA Trophy clash against league leaders Ebbsfleet tomorrow.
