A brilliant century by Australian under 19 captain Jake Doran sent Henley to a five-wicket victory in their Division 1 top-of-the-table clash at Banbury on Saturday.

The eagerly-awaited clash between the two unbeaten teams was dominated by Doran’s superb 121 as Henley, chasing a a target of 211 for victory, got home with 17 balls to spare.

Doran, a wicket-keeper/batsman who is seen as a future Test player, outshone his Banbury counterpart Tim Paine, an Aussie Test star of the recent past.

Indeed Paine was the first batsman to fall after Henley had won the toss and asked Banbury to bat first.

Paine was out for 13, caught off left-arm seamer Tahir Afridi, who also accounted for Hugo Darby as Banbury slipped to 34-2.

The Banbury innings was dominated by Lloyd Sabin, who is in sublime form this season, having scored two double-centuries for Oxford MCC Universities.

Sabin struck 93 of 137 balls with 11 fours.

Richard West, with whom Sabin shared a third wicket-stand of 44, was the next top scorer on 20, before he became one of two victims for left-arm spinner Gurveer Singh.

Sabin was eighth out in the penultimate over falling to Afridi, who finished with the excellent figures of 5-38 from his ten overs.

Banbury were restricted to 210-8, a reasonable total but not a challenging one.

Henley made a circumspect start against tidy opening spells from Karl Penhale and Ashley Blanchard.

After Penhale dismissed David Barnes, there was joy in the Banbury camp when the previous week’s century-maker Michael Roberts and Matt Rowe departed in quick succession.

That made the visitors 67-3, but then Doran took charge.

The Aussie was particularly severe on West as he struck six sixes and 11 fours in his 121, which came of 108 balls.

He dominated a fourth-wicket stand of 131 with Ziafrat Ashraf before falling with Henley in sight of victory
