OXFORD United are aiming to be very active on transfer deadline day, with head coach Michael Appleton hoping to have three new players signed before 11pm.

Tyrone Barnett remains on the radar and United also have an eye on a midfielder.

While those two moves are up in the air, one looks a done deal.

Speaking after Saturday’s 2-0 win at Stevenage, the U’s boss confirmed that Burton Albion striker Alex MacDonald is due for a medical this morning after agreeing personal terms and, providing he passes that, will join for an undisclosed fee.

The 24-year-old caught Appleton’s eye on the opening day of the season, when the Brewers won 1-0 at the Kassam Stadium.

“The first thing I said when I got into my office afterwards was ‘I’d take the wide players all day’,” he said.

“We felt there was an opportunity to have a go at Alex because he only had six months left on his contract.”

With the former Burnley trainee’s switch expected to be tied up quickly, it gives United the rest of the day to go after their other targets.

A sizeable bid for Barnett was accepted at the start of last month and the 29-year-old striker is due to finally make up his mind today.

Appleton said: “We’ve made it very clear we want to bring him to the club and, as far as I’m aware, pretty much everything is agreed – it will just be down to the boy.”

“The ball is in his court, we’ll leave him be and hopefully he will make the right decision.”

That leaves one remaining target – a mystery midfielder.

Appleton said: “If we can capture the player I have in my mind and we get three acquisitions by 11pm, it would certainly make the squad a lot stronger than it is now.”

Going in the other direction, David Hunt is close to agreeing a settlement.

The full back is likely to join Barnet, where he has spent the past three months on loan, for the rest of the season.

Clarity is also expected on John Campbell, who returned to the north east after his initial deal came to an end at the weekend.
