JAMES Coles is a batsman to watch after scoring three centuries in five days – as a ten-year-old.

The youngster, who made his debut for Aston Rowant Under 10s when aged only five, hit the first two of his tons for Magdalen College School Under 10s.

He started his amazing run on Wednesday last week when he made 102 not out against Swanbourne House Prep School, Milton Keynes.

Then on Saturday, the hard-hitting right-hander scored 113 not out against Cothill House School, near Abingdon.

The coup de grace came on Sunday when Coles played for Oxfordshire Under 10s in a friendly against Buckinghamshire at Thame Town.

He dominated the Oxon innings with 132 off 119 balls before being caught on the boundary – the first time he was out after scoring 347 runs.

Oxon made 222 all out from 39.5 overs, before bowling Bucks out for 90 in 33.2 overs.

Coles, who also bowls left-arm Chinaman deliveries, did not feature in this innings, which saw Will Price (3-10) and Carrick Dunbar (2-3) shine.

“I must pay tribute to David Dyer, the head of sport at MCS junior school, and Neil Pickup, the Oxfordshire Under 10 manager, for their work with James,” said the youngster’s father Jon Coles.

Coles senior, the Buckinghamshire senior side’s team manager, also praised Aston Rowant’s Wes Morrick for his coaching ability.

OXFORDSHIRE suffered their first defeat in ECB Under 15 County Cup Group 2B with a 53-run reverse to Bedfordshire at Langford CC.

Having won three of their four matches, Oxon still top the table.

Connor Robson’s 60 not out underpinned Bedfordshire’s 210-7 in 50 overs, while Jack Tomes (2-8) was the pick of the visitors’ bowlers.

William Hawtin led Oxon’s reply with 41, but Jonty Robinson’s 20 was the next best score as they were all out for 157 in 46.5 overs, Jack Kilduff taking 3-34.

OXFORDSHIRE Under 13s lost by 27 runs to Buckinghamshire in a friendly at Campbell Park, Milton Keynes.

Monty Weatherall (80) and Marcus Critchley (46) led the way in Bucks’ 215-8 from 40 overs, Joe Chown taking 3-14.

Ben Charlesworth (41), Oliver Price (37), Jake Taylor (35) and Ben Coldicott (34no) then all got going, but Oxon closed on 188-7.

In last Saturday’s Oxford Mail, it was reported that Ben Charlesworth scored 70 for Oxfordshire Under 13s.
