MEN'S HOCKEY: Bicester cash in as South Bucks spurn keeper

South Bucks arrived with 11 players but none of them wanted to play in goal and they used a ‘kicking-back’ instead, which proved fatal.

Bicester were 7-0 up at half-time with Dave Sutcliffe helping himself to five goals and Jonny Reid and Luke Smith also on the mark.

Sutcliffe (5), Smith (2), Reid and Simeon Nicholls completed the rout.

Oxford Hawks lost their penultimate game in 5-2 away to London Wayfarers in Battersea, but results elsewhere means they have survived for an other season in Premier Division 1 of the South League.

The visitors got off to a flier as James Gilbert put them ahead, but Wayfarers took command and netted three times before Charlie Ellison pulled one back.

Two further goals sealed a flattering 5-2 victory for the Londoners. Witney are relegated to Regional Division 2 after a 3-2 defeat to Wycombe.

Liam Frost bagged both goals.

Oxford’s promotion hopes faltered after a 4-2 defeat to Henley. Matt McKeown and Will Phillips were on target.
