ALAN Awcock is happy to keep representing London Welsh on two fronts as his season goes from strength-to-strength.

The 25-year-old made his first league start at full back in Welsh’s 28-0 victory over Ealing on Sunday, but his day job remains as the club’s community development officer.

Awcock, from Chilton, near Wantage, went to King Alfred’s School and played junior and senior rugby for Grove.

Technically still on-loan from Henley, Awcock could yet be offered a full-time deal with Welsh, but is taking the whole process in his stride.

“My full-time job is a community development officer,” he said. “That’s my priority.

“Then training and playing comes very much around that at the minute.”

Awcock added: “I like my job. I wouldn’t do it if I didn’t. I am enjoying developing rugby in the area and there is a massive opportunity at the mom-ent.

“But at the same time, I have played rugby all my life and it is nice to be involved in a professional environment with London Welsh.”

Regarding a possible deal with Welsh, Awcock said: “It is just wait and see what happens.

“I keep plodding along and trying to do the basics right once I get the mould of playing in the team.”

Although he has appeared at wing and full back, Awcock said No 15 is his preferred position.

Reflecting on the Ealing match, Awcock said: “I am happy with a five-pointer and to get my first start in Championship rugby. It was a good start for me.

“I had a few good touches early doors, but there were a few things I need to work on.

“It is my home town and it’s nice to run out in what is the Oxford stadium in front of a few friends and family.

“I had a couple of shouts for me. It was a nice feeling.”

Awcock previously played for Newport in the Welsh Premiership where a highlight included beating Exeter in the British & Irish Cup.

But of his latest club, he stressed: “This is definitely the highest level I have played at.”

Henley remain Awcock’s official club and he still keeps in contact with them.

He said: “I am still there at the moment, but we can cross that bridge now and see what happens in the next couple of weeks.

“Initially I was thinking I would be playing the two British & Irish Cup games with Welsh as cover.

“But Justin Burnell has given me the opportunity and I hope I can pay it back on the field.

“Henley are such a good club and they kick-started my career again.

“The coaching staff and players are top drawer.

“With me getting the opportunity to play higher, they promote that.

“It has worked nicely for me and I am grateful for the opportunity Henley have allowed me to have.”

With only 1,004 having watched the Ealing game, Awcock said low home crowds were a concern for all at the club, but is confident progress will be made.

“If the team keep winning and our work keeps building, I think it is a no- brainer that people will start to come and watch,” he said.
