SCOTT Davies is fired up to get Oxford United through in the FA Cup replay at Gateshead tonight and make up for an error which almost set up a shock in the first game.

The midfielder gave the ball away cheaply, leading to Jamie Chandler putting the Skrill Premier side 2-0 up early in the second half at the Kassam Stadium.

United appeared to be heading for defeat, but late goals from Deane Smalley and Danny Rose rescued a draw to set up tonight’s return on Tyneside.

An injury pile-up means Davies will almost certainly start and the 25-year-old admitted he will have added incentive to perform well and avoid an upset.

He said: “Having cost us the second goal, yes.

“I’ve never been so happy when I saw Danny Rose head the ball in.”

The game will be televised live on BT Sport and with the second round tie at Wrexham also set to be broadcast, there is £90,000 at stake for the winners.

And Davies wants to take the opportunity to show the country why United are top of Sky Bet League Two.

He said: “It’s not often we get live on TV and it will probably be viewed by millions of people.

“Everyone wants to do well, you don’t want to make a fool of yourself and we have to be professional to get the job done.”

United were counting the walking wounded when they left for the north east yesterday, but did have one piece of good news.

Striker James Constable, who netted his 100th goal for the club last Saturday, is optimistic about his chances of recovering from a foot injury picked up during the 3-1 win at Mansfield Town.

He said: “It won’t do any lasting damage, so maybe it will need an injection and will then be alright.

“We’re down to the bare bones, so I’m desperate to be involved and hopefully it will just be a case of strapping it up to get out there.”

Gateshead will go into the game in good form, with Saturday’s 3-2 win at home to Salisbury meaning Gary Mills’s men have lost just once in ten games.
