OXFORDSHIRE opener Lloyd Sabin has been appointed Oxford MCCU’s 50-overs captain for next season.

The 19-year-old Banbury batsman impressed in his first season playing for the side last summer. Hampshire 2nds’ Wilf Marriot will captain the two/three-day side, succeeding Charlie Morris, who is joint club captain with Gus Kennedy, the Twenty20 skipper.

They are among 27 students from the city’s two universities who have been selected to form the Oxford MCCU academy squad for 2013-14. It also includes Aston Rowant duo Nick Ferraby and Karl Penhale, plus Oxford wicket-keeper Jasper Davies.

All-rounder Ferraby, 30, joins the squad as a postgraduate student at Oxford, while seamer Penhale, who made an impact for Oxfordshire this season, is in his first year at Oxford Brookes. The squad, which is made up of 18 students from Oxford Brookes and ten from Oxford University, also includes Sussex and England U19 player Abi Sakande.

Head coach Graham Charlesworth said: “This year, we are doing things a little different. We have a slightly larger group of players, which allows us greater flexibility. “We are heading down the ECB route of having differing captains for the competitons, and also making the players own the programme far more. “Most of the senior players are taking some sort of lead in an aspect of the programme.”

The squad are supported by an extensive coaching team, which includes former England seamer Jon Lewis, who recently retired from professional cricket with Surrey.

Charlesworth added: “We have a pedigree of producing very talented players who leave university into the workplace with a well-respected degree and, of course, the ultimate aim, which sees some going into professional cricket.”
