OXFORDSHIRE Under 16s were triumphant at the 2013 Standard Bank Festival after winning four of their five games in the Channel Islands.

It took a last-day success against Jersey to clinch the trophy.

Oxfordshire started against Hampshire, and they produced a stunning display in a 69-run victory.

Captain Sam Haselgrove lost the toss – as he did for all five games – and Oxon were inserted.

But they made 233-8 from their 50 overs, Tom Condon hitting 56, Callum Russell 44 not out and Alex Davies 32.

In reply, the first-class county were shot out for 164 as Tom Costley, Davies and Haselgrove took two wickets apiece.

On day two, Oxon, facing Buckinghamshire, looked to be up against it as they were restricted to 143-9 from their 50 overs.

James Fitzjohn’s 33 was crucial, while Oxon’s last three wickets put on 50 runs.

Costley was the star with the ball as he returned 4-25 as Bucks were bowled out for 119.

There were two wickets for Davies and Saim Hussain, while Max Mannering’s ten overs yielded just 11 runs.

Day three saw Oxon’s biggest victory margin as they thumped Berkshire by seven wickets. Batting first, Berkshire were bowled out for 172, Costley taking 2-23, Haselgrove 2-29 and Jonny Meardon 2-19.

In reply, Oxon pair Harry Ackland and Condon shared 108 for the first wicket.

Condon fell for 79, while Ackland went on to score 73 as Oxon cruised to 174-3 in 37.4 overs.

Three wins out of three meant Oxon were top of the table going into day four against Cheshire.

But they came unstuck against the northerners, who made 163-9 in their 50 overs.

There were two wickets again for Costley (2-29), Hussain (2-41), Mannering (2-20) and Haselgrove (2-27).

In reply, Condon top-scored with 34, while Russell finished unbeaten on 31, but a spell of three wickets in two overs saw Oxon stumble from 60-3 to 60-6.

They were eventually bowled out for 132.

With Hampshire and Bucks winning all their other games, the title was up for grabs on the final day.

Hampshire defeated Bucks by 50 runs, meaning Oxon had to post a convincing victory over Jersey.

And they did just that to wrap up the trophy for the first time.

Davies led the way with 87 as Oxon posted 220-9 in their 50 overs.

A large margin of victory was needed to boost their net run rate and Oxon set about the home side’s batting order, reducing them to 56-7 with Costley finishing with 4-26.

Hendrick Robyns chipped in with 2-24, but Oxon knew they needed to dismiss the hosts for less than 150 to be certain of the title.

Oxon removed Jersey’s star batsman Jonty Jenner for a second-ball duck, which proved crucial.

And when Jersey’s last man was caught in the deep by Ackland with the score on 150, it sparked wild celebrations.

Costley finished the week with 14 wickets, while Russell had the top batting average (120), getting out just once in the week.

Condon was the leading run-scorer with 166 runs, with Davies finishing on 162.
