OXFORD’S Hannah England said she was glad to make the 1,500m final at the World Athletics Championships in Moscow last night, writes STUART WEIR.

The Oxford City star and 2011 world silver medallist qualified for tomorrow’s showdown (6.20pm) after finishing fifth in her semi-final.

England made her move on the final lap to secure automatic passage into the final, crossing the line in a time of 4mins 6.80secs.

“I feel that I am good enough to be in the final and I am just glad that I’ve done it,” said England.

“But after watching the first semi-final and seeing Nancy Langat (2008 Olympic Champion) not making an automatic qualifying place, I was nervous that anything could happen.”

After a quick first semi-final in which the seventh-placed finisher clocked 4.05.32, England knew it was even more important to come in the top five in her race.

She stayed towards the back of the pack for most of the race and at one stage looked in danger of being boxed in, but England felt comfortable.

She said: “There was no barging where I was, but I could see people pushing and shoving outside me.

“I was lucky that a gap opened up and I was able to go through it.

“It was a nervous last 100m when I was in fifth. I knew I could stay with the Russian (Ekaterina Sharmina), but I did not know if anyone was catching me.”

England’s semi-final contained defending champion Jenny Simpson (USA) and title favourite Abeba Aregawi (Sweden).

“It wasn’t easy, but I knew it would be hard and that I would have to run hard the whole way,” she said.
