CHRIS Wilder felt Oxford United were on the receiving end of a harsh scoreline as they were knocked out of the Capital One Cup at The Valley.

Simon Church scored twice and there were also goals for Danny Green and Joe Pigott as Championship side Charlton Athletic ran out 4-0 winners.

The U’s boss rued a spell before half-time when the visitors were unable to convert a good period of pressure into a goal.

Charlton, who play two divisions above United, also made the most of some good fortune with Church’s double, and Wilder thought his players could hold their heads up high.

He said: “I don’t think we disgraced ourselves.

“We were a bit disappointed in a few decisions and with a couple of the goals.

“The second one was a deflection, the first was a block which fell to the boy, who we felt was a touch offside.

“But we were up against it and I think we gave a good account of ourselves.”

He added: “There were good lessons all night.

“We’re disappointed to go out and I think people away from here will look at the scoreline and think it’s a bit of a mauling, but I don’t believe it was.”

David Hunt was frustrated to go out of the competition at the first hurdle, but stressed the focus would quickly switch back to the Sky Bet League Two campaign which resumes this Saturday.

The defender said: “It’s never easy to shrug off, no-one likes losing 4-0.

“But it just wasn’t our day and it’s pointless getting beaten up over it when we’ve got Bury to look forward to on Saturday.”
