A thrilling one-wicket victory off the final ball of an absorbing game put the seal on a brilliant tussle against Berkshire as Oxon under 16 boys maintained their 100 per cent record this season at Stonesfield.

Chasing down Berkshire’s total of 222 all out, Oxon were briefly stumbling at 48-4, before a brilliant 137-run stand for the fifth wicket between Callum Russell and James Fitzjohn put Oxon back on track.

A cluster of late wickets led to a nail-biting finish, but Oxfordshire hit the winning run off the last ball.

Batting first, Berkshire lost wickets regularly, despite rattling along at five runs per over.

They were led by a superb century from Mohammad Avas, who finished with 113, while Tom Costley took 3-47 for Oxon.

Two wickets apiece for spin trio Sam Haselgrove, Max Mannering and Jonny Meardon ensured Oxon kept in control throughout.

In their reply, Oxfordshire were quickly 15-2 as opener Tom Condon and No 3 Harry Ackland fell cheaply.

Alex Davies and Joel Washbourn-Calcutt soon followed, before Russell and Fitzjohn came together at the crease.

The pair shared a magnificent stand to take Oxon to the brink of victory at 185-5.

However, another cluster of wickets saw Oxon needing seven to win off the final over with one wicket left to leave the nerve ends jangling.

And it was left to Leo Bethell and Meardon to knock off the runs, with Meardon scrambling a single off the last ball to secure the victory.

Meardon takes the honours in last-gasp victory.
